BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA

Bosnia-Herzegovina is made up of two portions: Bosnia, the larger, northern region and Herzegovina, the smaller, southern region. It is nearly 20,000 square miles with approximately 4 million residents. The country declared its independence during the 1990's and a full-out war ensued. The war began with the Croats and Bosniaks taking sides against the Serbs (who were all for ethnic cleansing). Once that fight was over, the Croats and Bosniak began fighting amongst each other.
The hardships of the war are ever-present throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina. A majority of buildings still feature bullet holes and markings from shrapnel, not to mention the obvious damage from bombings. Graveyards and cemeteries are many. This is still a country recovering and although the countryside is quite lovely, seeing the scars of war are heartbreaking.
