FREINSHEIM, GERMANY
OCTOBER 2009
A couple times a year, the village of Freinsheim (part of the Deutsche Weinstrasse or German wine street) holds what has come to be our favorite wine fest of the year. Freinsheim is in the Rheinland-Pfalz area and is known for their Rieslings (not the typical sweet stuff you get in the U.S. but really good drinking stuff) and their Grauburgunders. What makes this wine fest a favorite?
You walk through the vineyards for a total of 6km (about 4 miles) stopping at tents that are set up along the pathway. Each tent offers a particular winemakers wine (usually each wine maker serves around 6-9 varieties) and culinary cuisine set up to compliment that wine (all from local restaurants). So for 4 miles, you drink, eat and enjoy a sun soaked day in the last days of late summer. What could be better?
Well, my Mom was in town. That made it better. And it truly was a sun soaked day in Germany. Yippee, I say.
As we were leaving for our move to Italy on Monday and the winefest fell on the prior Saturday and Sunday (yes, the day before the movers came), we made sure all was complete for one last hurrah through Freinsheim and it's wunderbar weinfest. Prost, y'all. It was a perfect farewell.
