KARLOVY VARY, CZECH REPUBLIC
JUNE 2009
With my Aunt Lynn and her friend, Susie, visiting for a few weeks, we decided to make a trip to Poland and Czech Republic. Neither of them had visited these countries, and although I've visited several times, I thought it might be fun to visit a city I've not yet experienced. Being that I've been to Prague too many times now to count (not all trips are posted, it can get reduntant), I thought..hmm....I've heard alot about Karlovy Vary, so heck, let's go there. And there we went.
It was a very quick trip, but one needn't spend too much time here unless taking full advantage of the many thermal springs that make Karlovy Vary known as the bath town it is (it is also known as Carlsbad meaning Carl's Bath). Karlovy Vary has spent alot of time and money remodeling and updating the town and it's original Art Nouveau architecture now glistens with pride due to the brilliancy of candy colored facades and high-end stores lining the streets. It is surrounded by lush forests and offers alot of hiking options to those interested. The main area of Karlovy Vary is crammed with crystal shops, jewelry stores and outdoor cafes, all meandering along the river that runs through the center of the town. There are many thermal springs for drinking or soaking your ailments away...but be wary! Don't drink too much of the mineral-laden cocktails or you'll soon find yourself high-tailing it to a potty. I know not from experience, but from our hotel's owner (who was kind enough to inform us to only 'sip' the water). I didn't drink anything, but instead 'drank in' the lovely architecture and cafes. I didn't take too many photos, as we were there for such a short time (and the walkways were very, very steep so I was more focused on baby buggy driving than I was enjoying scenery). Hopefully the few I took will give you an idea of the charm offered here. Definitely worth a visit, but I'd allow at least a few days of relaxation and sightseeing....that is, afterall, what Karlovy Vary is known for!
