MEDUGORJE, BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA
AUGUST 2008

Medugorje (pronounced medge-ooh-gor-yah) might sound familiar to some of you, as back in the 1980's, six young boys saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. Today, it has become a pilgrimage sight for over 30 million visitors from the time of the apparition. It is a small town not too far from the Bosnia-Croatia border and once you make your way through the rosary-filled souvenir shops, you park your car and walk up a steep one mile rocky hill to the sighting of the apparitions. Once at the top, you'll find lone people or groups praying, kneeling before a statue of Mary, or sitting on a rock reading The Bible. As I sat there in silence, I noticed how the people seemed to come from no where, suddenly appearing high on top of this mountain.  Young, old, some healthy, some sick, some with canes. It didn't matter what your physical condition was, people were committed to making the pilgrimage to the top.  Prayers were written on stones, napkins, water bottles, faded photos with prayers written on the backside were nestled between rocks, ribbons with Bible quotations were tied to tree limbs....it was a hilltop with lots of hope and thanks.
