NORMANDY, FRANCE
APRIL 2009
Christine's parents came over for a visit and we decided to take them to Normandy for a long weekend trip. It was their first visit, our second visit. We loved it just as much the second visit, as the first. The countryside is simple and lovely, the people are kind and the food, exquisite. This trip led us to stay at Hotel d'Argouges in Bayeux, France (http://www.ohotellerie.com/dargouges/index.php?p=gite). It proved a perfect location for us in getting to the WWII sites, as well as hanging out locally in Bayeux without having to drive around (which meant more wine with dinner). The hotel was once a chateau and had all kinds of charm. We even hired a French nanny to watch Jameson one night while we went to a 'grown up' dinner. As we left, we could hear her singing french lullabies to him...a sweet touch!
While in the Normandy area, we visited the American Cemetery, Omaha Beach, Utah Beach and a couple museums. We also made the trek to Le Mont St. Michel (an abbey surrounded by water) for a day. Our drive home (which is 7 hours) was broken up with many stops (for Jameson's sake). First stop was Versailles, to visit the Versailles Palace. Next, we drove through Paris to show Christine's Dad (he's never been) and Jameson all the cool sights and then it was on to Reims, France. Home of Champagne. And the Reims Cathedral, where many-a-French-King has been coronated. Our trip was wonderful, beginning to end. We look forward to revisiting the Normandy area (Calvados) in June for the 65 year anniversary of D-Day. President Obama will be paying a visit and we'll be there to give our thanks and share in the patriotism.
