Tuscan cities visited: Florence, Colle D'Elsa, Chianti, Siena
The Tuscany area is all that it is cracked up to be. Florence offers plenty to see and do, however is insanely crowded amid it's narrow streets. Colle d'Elsa is a small village located between Florence and Siena and was really endearing. The people were friendly and staying in the center of town for 4 days allowed us to get a good feel for the culture here. The oldest part of the city sat high on a hill overlooking much of the Tuscan region, and dates back to medieval times. Chianti is the picturesque Tuscan landscape you envision. Tall, thin trees lining the local vineyards, olive trees everywhere. And the wine!!! Ohh...that's good stuff. And then there was Siena. Ahh...Siena is a pretty big city, but not near as crowded as Florence. Lots of people flock to Siena for the Duomo (domed cathedral), city square (not square at all, but shell shaped) and shopping. And the food! Oh my gosh - if you ever visit Siena, visit Nello. The owner of Nello, Mauro, is a good friend of one of my father's friends. He recommended we visit and whoa! I understand why. The food appears complex (visually and in taste), however Mauro prides himself on using no more than a few ingredients per dish. Outstanding quality and a gracious host!!
