BAD DURKHEIM, GERMANY
SEPTEMBER 2006
Bad Durkheim.....location of the worlds largest wine fest that occurs annually and lasts a good two weeks (www.bad-duerkheim.de/html/Tourismus_/Englisch/). This village is found in the heart of the Deutsche Weinstrasse or the German Wine Street, about a 50 minute drive from our home. In appearances, the wine fest is typical of the fairs held in the US....lots of fried foods, sweets, games with prizes and lots of rides. But what the US does not offer is a sea of tents, as far as the eyes can see, hosting a wide assortment of delectable, regional wines.
Now, the wine tents are not the only difference between the fairs in the states and the fests in Germany. We noticed several vendors set up for the sole reason of selling cigarettes, serving hard liquor/alcohol, games where you can 'step right up, step right up' and win.......a plant, and lots of other traditions that we Americans do not share within our two week festivals.
