We decided, while in Varna, to hire a driver for the group of us (10 adults, 5 kids).  The cost, for all 15 people, for the entire day was $100.  Our driver said kids are free, so it came out to be $10 per person.  An insane deal for 8 hours of fantastic service, history lessons and the ability to see all there is to see in Varna.  Should any of you make a trip to Varna, be sure to give our driver a call and reserve him: His name is Gatev and  his work number is 0888-927063 / home number is 052-342806.  Don't forget to add the Bulgarian country code prior to dialing. Excellent tour and I don't know if there is a better deal around!

I found Varna to be rather interesting. Most of the city is a bit rundown, having little/no funds for restoration.  The architecture here is stunning, but one must look through the peeling paint and collapsing roofs to realize the beauty.  But, I like it.  It's raw.  You can see the former glory and the possibilities that lay within.  I've no doubt that things will change in the future...maybe 10 years or so.  But for the moment, enjoy the rustic charm and the value of the dollar.
