ODESSA, UKRAINE
SEPTEMBER 2007
Odessa was founded by Catherine the Great and is over 200 years old. Today, there are over 1,000,000 residents living here. It is known as the Pearl of the Black Sea an is the main port in Ukraine for trade and fishing.
My personal thoughts on Odessa: it was similar to what I experienced in Bucharest, Romania. Alot of richy, riches but waaaay more uber poor. Outside of Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, I have never in my life seen so many Maserati's or Bentley's. But then, you turn the corner, and there are little old ladies selling watermelons on the street, out of cardboard boxes. Somethin' ain't right here! There is no distinct poor area or rich area...everything is blended together, making the extremes a bit more noticeable.
To quote a travel book that I bought, "Odessa is a city famed for its sense of humor, and it is a city of contrasts. You will find the most expensive western cars thundering by at high speed over deep potholes, while elegantly clothed women in high-heeled shoes tiptoe through building sites. Expensive shops offer exclusive luxury goods from rundown storefronts. New, modern houses rise up directly next to those in ruins. While some parts of Odessa appear completely derelict, every stone tells a story of the city's still apparent charm". This describes Odessa to a perfection......it is, indeed, a city of contrasts.
And holy moly! You should see the women. I think God saved all the good looking genes and gave them to the women of Odessa. Stunning., tall, thin....goddesses. Here is another "never before in my life"...have I seen soooo many beautiful women in one small area. Gorgeous. I mean, I'm Ukrainian and look NOTHING like these girls. I'm thinking those genes were dolled out AFTER the year 1968. Damn!
