MASADA, ISRAEL
NOVEMBER 2007
Masada is located in the Dead Sea region (overlooking the Dead Sea), and on the eastern edge of the Judean Deserst. It was the location of a great palace, belonging to King Herod and his family. Masada is also known as the location of The First Jewish-Roman War (aka Great Jewish Revolt). It was during this war that the Romans sieged the Masada Fortress, leading the Jewish rebels to chose mass suicide rather than to be captured by their enemies. Almost 1,000 perished during this mass suicide. It was added to UNESCO in 2001 (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1040/).
