VATICAN CITY
The proper name for Vatican City is 'State of the Vatican City' (who knew??). It is the smallest independent state in the world in terms of population and area. There are 800 residents and Vatican City sprawls 110 acres. Yup...acres. Its a fairly new state...born in 1929 via the Lateran Treaty, which separated it from Italy. Popes have lived here (or nearby) since the Papal reign returned to the area in 1377, from Avignon, France.
