VIENNA, AUSTRIA
DECEMBER 2009
I've been to Vienna a few times now and I have to say, this visit might have been the prettiest. Vienna in the summer is lovely...but Vienna during the holidays is magical. The streets are decorated with bells, trees and lights. Christmas markets pop-up around every corner offering local arts and crafts, handmade glass ornaments, warm and inviting food and an ambience that simply can't be put in words. Street vendors sell Christmas trees and the scent of fresh pine fills your lungs alongside the wonderous warm aroma of roasting chestnuts and warm spiced Gluhwein. Aahhh....all this helps warm the soul and you soon forget just how chilly it really is.
We spent a few days walking around, visiting the palaces and various sights of Vienna. Every inch of the city was brightly lit and you couldn't help but feel that it was Christmas. Despite our being so far from family, Christmas Day felt just as it should - warm and loving, with little reminders of just what this special day is all about.
